Central Courtyard, London, London, United Kingdom
Candida Powell-Williams presents an interactive site-specific installation inside one of the square’s outdoor courtyards. Taking the history of Devonshire Square as a departure point, the artist borrows historical and absurd narratives, adding mythological, art historical and pop-culture references, folding these moments from the past into the present. The construction of the warehouses was started by the East India Trading Company in 1768 and continued into the 1820s. They stored raw silk, piece goods and textiles from Bengal. Drawing imagery from textiles once stored in the warehouses, Powell-Williams creates sculptural objects, that function as a platform for performance and interactive activities.
