Lovely Girls

117 Nicolson Street, Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom

Friday, August 2, 2019 - 20:45 to Saturday, August 17, 2019 - 20:45

hess and Cristina are the multi award-winning duo The Hiccup Project, but are often introduced as the lovely hiccup girls. At first, they didn't think any of it, because women are supposed to be lovely after all. But then they started to wonder what else they could be... Lovely Girls uses their powerful blend of dance, theatre and comedy to delve into the ridiculous and limiting contradictions, clichés and expectations of being a woman today: be sexy, but don’t be a slut; strive for a career, but make time for everyone else; be curvy, but not fat; be assertive, but not bossy…. what more can we hope for a woman to be, when we still value women by their beauty and ‘loveliness’? A poignant, hilarious and truthful journey, Lovely Girls imagines a world where women can be – and do - whatever they want. Lovely Girls is on at ZOO Southside from Friday 2 to Saturday 17 August.

Cristina and Chess take their audience on a poignant, hilarious and truthful journey where they imagine a world where women can be – and do – whatever they want. A celebration of two women, reclaiming their power. An engaging and uplifting show, it is an insight, a celebration and an ode to being a woman in the 21st century.

‘An utter delight… reflects the reality and expectations of women in the 21st Century… full of comedy and charm.’

Ian Abbott, Writing About Dance

Both from Brighton, Cristina and Chess trained together at Northern School of Contemporary Dance. After graduating, Chess went on to train and tour with Jasmin Vardimon's JV2 Company. Merging theatre, dance and comedy in their practice, their first show May-We-Go-Round? had two five-night sell out runs in Brighton in 2015, including at Brighton Fringe, winning several awards, including the, Fringe Review Award for Outstanding Theatre and shortlisted for the Audience Choice Award. The show went to a sell-out 10 day run at Edinburgh Fringe at Dance Base in 2016, and a two-year national tour. Their second show It’s Okay, I’m Dealing With It was mentored by Ben Duke (Lost Dog Dance) and has had two critically acclaimed UK tours. Lovely Girls’s dramaturgy is by Solène Weinachter (Scottish Dance Theatre, Lost Dog, Gecko and others), with mentoring support from Bryony Kimmings. The Hiccup Project is supported by South East Dance Emerging Artist Scheme, Arts Council England, Dance East and The Place in London.
