Opening concert of the 7th International Festival of Vocal Music “Opera Apriori”

St Andrew's Anglican Church. Voznesensky lane 8/5, building 3, Moscow, Russian Federation

Saturday, February 8, 2020 - 19:00 to 22:00

The festival “Opera Apriori” has been established in Russia since 2014. Every year its programme features all genres of vocal music – song cycles, concert performances of operas, programmes with distinctive themes based on scenes and arias from operatic masterpieces, and chamber and vocal-symphonic works. The festival presents a historical survey of the development of opera from the late 16th and early 17th centuries to the present day. Participants in the festival include established opera singers from all over the world.

In 2019, the opening concert features a Russian premiere and a world premiere, sung by two outstanding vocal ensembles, each of them acclaimed both by audiences and by critics in their own countries. VOCES8 and the Intrada vocal ensemble under Ekaterina Antonenko will sing one of the greatest pieces of English music of all time – Thomas Tallis’ 40-voice motet Spem in alium. In addition, the festival has commissioned contemporary composer Father Ivan Moody to create a piece, with the working title of Transfiguration, specially to be performed by these two ensembles. The programme will also include English choral music from different centuries – from Purcell to Britten – making the concert a great musical journey in English musical culture.
