WOW Global 24 is WOW – Women of the World’s first ever free 24 hour online festival uniting women and girls across the world. Available to watch 27-28 June live #WOWGlobal24.
The effects of COVID-19 pose a profound risk of reversing progress made towards achieving equality, one that must be tackled together and fast. Black Lives Matter has increased WOW’s sense of urgency. Running across all time zones over 24 hours, WOW Global 24 will respond to the world’s current events, including racial injustice, and the disproportionate impact the pandemic is having on women and girls, particularly those already marginalised.
Across two channels curated by teams from all over the world, audiences will hear from women, girls and people of all genders who are working towards a better, post pandemic world.
WOW Festivals are also places of warmth, inclusiveness and fun, and WOW Global 24 is no exception. It will be filled not just with serious intent but also with energetic spontaneous encounters, human connection, unexpected delights, adventure, levity of spirit, and laughter.
The festival is free and accessible to anyone who is able to watch online or on a mobile device. It’s for people of all ages and backgrounds who can join at any point along the way.
The focus of the festival will move as the world turns. Anyone can tune into one of two channels – The Global Channel and The Local Channel – streaming live and simultaneously over the 24 hours. The programme is designed so that when you’re watching during daylight hours, the multitude of events will be generated from your area.
The Global Channel will be created along partners including Connected Women Leaders, Theirworld, CARE International UK, UN Women and RAW in WAR: Reach All Women in WAR.
The Local Channel will be created by WOW partners: British Council, Across Red Lines, Ake Arts & Book Festival, WOW Bradford, Redes da Maré – Somos Todos Maré and WOW Australia / Of One Mind.
Tune in and participate in the largest ever online gathering of people of all genders who support gender equality. Now more than ever we need to find community; to connect women, civil society and governments and make women’s stories central to future planning across the globe. This is an opportunity to join hands, listen and ask ‘what do we need to change, and how’?
The Global Channel
The Global Channel concentrates on six themes: EDUCATION, JUSTICE, CLIMATE, HEALTH, THE ECONOMY and VIOLENCE.
Each of these themes will be explored three times by different groups of global leaders, community activists, and girls and young women as we reach them in turn, discussing the situation specific to them. There will be music and performance throughout.
Over the 24 hours WOW Global 24 will build up a worldwide picture of the current situation for girls and women, and the events and ideas that are creating positive or adverse impacts.
The main language will be English.
The Local Channel
The Local Channel will focus on contributions from places already part of the WOW movement – Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, the Middle East, Turkey, UK, Nigeria, Brazil, USA, and Australia and the Pacific. The channel will feature communities bringing to life local issues and responses. There will be conversation, performances, workshops, music and more, all in local languages. Each event will bring stories of resilience, leadership and examples of ‘building back better’ for all to see.
