Designs for the new 2,000-seat Centre for Music concert hall conceived by the Barbican, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and London Symphony Orchestra have been revealed in a new video from architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Watch the video below.
The new building will be located on the previous site of the Museum of London at 140–150 London Wall on Smithfield Market near Farringdon and will act as a 'welcoe point' for London's new Cultural Mile. The aim is for the centre to be the hub of music-making and education in the city. It will include major innovations like acoustically-controlled pods, and allowing the public visual insight into the creative process through clear wall panels around the music hall.
Sir Simon Rattle, LSO’s music director, has championed the project, said: “The idea that there can be a new cultural centre in London, in Culture Mile, and that in the middle of it, a truly great international, modern concert hall of our time, equipped for everything of this age, is very exciting — a sign of London as a dynamic cultural city, at a time when we are going to need this more and more.”
